Kia, it’s my homemade Star Wars chess set. I used cartoony Star Wars figures glued to styrofoam bases (they don’t stand well by themselves) with little letters designating their chess title - K for King, Q for Queen, etc. Most chess boards are too small for these Star Wars figures, so I had to make the board myself by cutting up some sturdy foamboard and painting 3 inch squares on it - which was the really really really tedious part. Especially since my first attempt at making a chess board used 2 inch squares and they were too small for fatty figures like Vader or Grievous. These little cartoony figurines are less fragile than the more realistic SW figures. The board is showing wear and tear because I made it a year ago and you know - kids.

I see tons of SW figures at Target (the kids’ favorite store) and Toys R Us.

Great chess set. I know some SW Geeks who would pay good money for that.

Great game to teach the kids too. The kids doing the off board action reminds me of Battlechess. Remember that game? When the pieces would fight each other when you captured one?

You ought to get a patent and market your set to a toy company. Just think of the residuals you’d make.

Emily, I made it. Just buy those stubby little Star Wars figures that don’t move or bend and glue them to foamboard squares (at any craft, art, or dollar store). The board itself has to be larger than most though (3 inch squares) and is a pain to measure and paint. I just used India Ink (my generic drawing/painting ink) from any art store and a brush. I’m sure a black marker would be fine too… goddammit, why didn’t I think of that before?
