Thanks for sharing the video link. I went to school for animation and graphic design and since I graduated I’ve always played with the idea of creating a graphic novel someday. Watching this video makes it seem not so intimidating! I’d say go for it. Seems like you are already practicing after all!(previous entries in comic book style).I especially like how the artist, Doug Tenapel, mentions he had a mentor in Bill Waterson, since I believe having a mentor is truly important and wonderful.

Yeah… I’ve scripted two so far. Finding an artist who is prepared to do the real work of drawing it is the challenge. It seems the artists I know also have day jobs and families to feed. The worst part is when you get involved in this kind of project and you script it, do character portraits (the written kind) and then your artist collaborator does amazing drawings and then two years later… you’re still talking - just not about the graphic novel project.
(sorry ranting on someone else’s blog… for shame)
Hello Paula! (See what I did there?) Thanks for posting. I would think that going to graphic design school would make creating your own art a whole lot easier, at least in regards to formatting the art in this new fangled computer stuff. I caught Sun Su running around in that get up and had to stop him for a picture.
Paul, I can imagine the frustration. I know I could never draw a book for someone else until I finished my own - there’s just no time these days. Please rant on - this is the stuff I want to hear.
Scott, you seem to be building up the pantheon for some kind of “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Pathology” story. You just have to make the doctors laugh, and make the work accessible so that they’ll be comfortable recommending it to everyone else. Quitting your job and burning through your savings is totally an option, and letting people figure out some new way to sue you.
I had a half-assed web presentation for a children’s story I’ve got a fire lit to finish (linked from my name), because I’ve since thought of a new way to allow the reader to flip through “pages” with the scroll-bar. I’m still going to keep the finished work free. Maybe I can sell the sequel.
Thanks Mike. I’ve managed to hammer out a plot outline but I’ve still got a few faces to place in my pantheon - like Thora VI (Thoracic Surgery), Ortho (Orthopedic), Pallas Styx (Plastics), and Sir Jury (finally). I won’t quit my day job yet though.

Make your next comics-related purchase Kyle Baker’s How to Draw Stupid. He describes cartoon drama in the most fundamental terms, like how “suspense” is when “nothing happens.” A lot of true stuff no one else has figured out how to say yet (at least to me).
I want to write a screenplay and i am almost done with a 15 minute short… now I am going to bust out my camera and shoot the whole thing… anything to pass the time…
