HCG, that's an interesting way of explaining it to the kids.

Aande, you do have lovely kids.

Eric, I am almost over my cold. I occasionally cough up a lung but maybe that's the TB talkin'.

Having a cold this time of the year is the worst. When the sun is shining more and warmer than it has in months, one should not be blowing one's nose unless allergies are the cause.

Hi Scott. Hope you and Sun Su are feeling better. He is so cute.
My 2 boys are 1/2 Vietnamese and 1/2 Russian/Spanish/Jewish. I often wonder how they will or will not embrace their heritage. I am happy that there seem to be more and more children and families of mixed heritage now. It makes for a much more interesting world!

Late again to this as usual but something I tell my kid over and over again is that he's 100% Corean and 100% Chinese AND 100%...you get the idea. Because how can you qualify a fraction of a percentage as it relates to a person physically anyway? is being 1/4 an ethnicity equal to a leg or hand?

BB, thanks for the comments. I don't think I really wish for an ethnic identity anymore. I've sailed those waters and I've returned to my own shore. Whatever comes back or stays with me, I keep as treasure.

Jeanetta, WTF. You've been hiding your website from me all this time? You sneaky hillbilly. :-)

Bonnie, thanks. In two weeks, I find out if the patient's family, floor nurses, and myself have to go on TB meds for a year. *cough*

Cindy, thanks! Congrats again on your 2-book deal!!!

Jen, it's even worse considering Michigan only has 3 good months a year. Sun Su's better at least.

Rachel, so true. We either overcompensate or completely ignore that side sometimes. If you wear a kilt though, post a video please.

I can fully relate to you, Scott. Being half Chinese has been trying in that regard - you're never entirely one thing, which can make you proud and more interested in your culture(s) than some 100% ethnic individuals might be, but there seems to be a tendency for them to not accept a mixed background person as easily.

It can be rather isolating at times, but very rich in other ways.

I hope you and your son are already feeling better.

As for the kilt - I'm thinking of joining a pipes & drums band, but the idea of me in a kilt is ridiculous.

Mom said we are mongrels. Irish, Scots, English, and I think some German on the Shields side. Not sure. :-)

Get over your cold and lots of luck on the TB exposure. The ID reminded me when daughter got bit by a brown recluse. That is what they finally decided took 1/4 of her hand anyway.

I've been looking through lots of old pictures lately and even posted a few of my Dad yesterday on my myspace.

http://www.myspace.com/sharkbaitdz

I'm pretty sure the strongest part of my heritage is "hillbilly" and I seriously have the photgraphic proof. Dad claimed some American Indian like everybody else around here does, but he couldve been a bit more serious considering how far out in the middle of nowhere he lived when he was a kid. Other than that, I have no idea what ethnicity to claim and have no real ideas about my ancestors at all. I tried to get Dad interested in a family tree (and wish Id tried Mom instead before she died.. my bad) and all he ever said was "bah.. I dont remember all those people, they all died of some disease a long time ago, cholera maybe." :)
