“she’s not chinese! do i look chinese to you? i am corean and so is my daughter. remember that, so you don’t have to ask her again!”

Wait, people are taking opportunities to deny they're Chinese? The Chinese invented paper. Do you know what we'd be wiping our asses with without the Chinese? Corn cobs. Try flushing a corn cob sometime.

Rick, I still have my 3DO, dawg! I missed the whole Nintendo era because the 3DO was cheaper at the time (as in going out of business) and I liked the FMV games. I still keep it just for two games - Supreme Warrior (a 1st person kung fu game filmed on a real Chinese set with actual Hong Kong actors) and Space Hulk (the coolest Warhammer 40K game ever made).

Jen, thanks. I know the feeling.

Blbrry, so Corean, haha. My mom said I should become a doctor so I could get lots of poonan -- er, girlfriends too. I got: one. :-)

Mike, your isolation theory makes sense. That Austrian case in particular was disgusting. You could probably apply the same to that incest cult with all the monobrows that was all over the news last week.

Aein, your mom sounds awesome. Reminds me of back when someone asked Amy for an egg roll at her family's Corean restaurant and she said, "Does this LOOK like a Chinese restaurant?" Congratulations again on your scholarship to Corea!!

Rick, that is some sad stuff. Kids can be cruel, that's for sure. Oh and yes, you can download DOOM on Xbox Live. It's still fun and a bit challenging on Ultraviolent and Nightmare settings. I haven't played Doom since I had my 3DO in medschool.

Doug, your son is definitely a bad ass. *salute*

My son was just the same as me growing up-quiet,bookish,seemingly not aggressive. He's a decorated Marine infantry Captain now. Go figure.

I wish I knew the right answer. I think parent intervention could probably do good (like what you did), but it can also harm. I was picked on a bunch because I wasn't cool, I was very quiet, I was (am) chubby, and we didn't have a lot of money. I regularly skipped school out of fear of confrontation, walked to other bus stops (a mile away)..I made the mistake of saying something to my grandmother about it once and the next day she came to the bus stop and yelled at the kids while I was there. I thought I would die.

I'm not sure what I would do...I'm large, so I have that going for me, but I'm also pretty soft spoken. I think I'd just like...clean rifles on the front lawn when the kids leave and come back from school. That might get the message across.

You're a very cool dad, Scott. I wish mine had taken an interest.

Also...Doom? Xbox Live has...Doom??

i think it was the right thing to do.. for you to intervene. sun su will probably remember it the rest of his life! just as i still remember the one time my mom intervened!

i was waiting in the library to be picked up from school (that's where the kids would wait after a certain time had passed.... this kid that always bothered me asked just as my mom walked in, "so, what are you? chinese?? ching chong!!!" my mom's eyes immediately looked at her and glared. she said without skipping a beat, "she's not chinese! do i look chinese to you? i am corean and so is my daughter. remember that, so you don't have to ask her again!" the librarian was wide-eyed, haha! but that kid never bothered me again. :)

I've started to think of vulnerability to predatory agendas in relation to the Stanford Prison Experiment in the early 1970s. The two factors in the decision to end the 14 day experiment 6 days in were the change in the supervising professor's temperament brought to his attention, and when taped surveillance showed how guard sadism increased dramatically at night after staff comprised of faculty went home. Closed access seems to have been what sheltered the Abu Ghraib abuses, and what sheltered that guy in Austria who kidnapped his own daughter, reported her as a runaway, and fathered her children and held them captive for 24 years (Austrian authorities have a history of not following up on complaints to the point that it's practically a taboo to a file complaint).

I'm at the age where aggressive youths who are in no way been intimidated by me presence are no longer indifferent to my presence on trains or as a client in stores where they work. I usually make it a point to scan an area, giving myself the slack to look at people for fives seconds at a time. If there's some kid glaring at me I'll give him some passes of eye contact, to let him know I know he's staring at me. If he doesn't care, and still glares at me, I'll look him deliberately in the eye. Except on one occasion, they all look away, and seem to realize they've been caught trying to isolate me, and that I won't let them. On the one exception, well, it sucked to be him, because I didn't give up, he looked away anyway, and that was the last time I saw him working at the deli counter.
