I think I have a thing for bad movies. Ultraviolet, Doom, Mortal Kombat, Dead or Alive. Maybe it’s because they’re all video game movies except for Ultraviolet, which just looks more like a video game than any other movie.
I just watched Hitman and I really liked it to my surprise. Brief origin. Remorseless body count. Olyphant’s deadpan deliveries. Ridiculously bloody. He even shoots people in the knees AND the elbows. But what I really liked was how socially dysfunctional the main hitman was throughout the movie. He doesn’t get the girl because he doesn’t know what to do with the girl. When she comes onto him, he tranquilizes her just to get her to stop. Would James Bond or Bruce Wayne do that? Even Leon the so-called Professional played dress-up for awhile. Leon, et tu?
Doom I actually liked for the brother and sister angle. I liked watching both siblings - Karl Urban kind of looks like the Doom guy and Rosamund Pike’s freaky stare hypnotizes me. I liked the point about some people having a little bit of evil in them. The first person sequence was well-done too.
Dead or Alive I mostly like for its fine T&A and golden triangle shots. Holly Valance and Sarah Carter really make up for the embarrassing script and casting choices.
Ultraviolet is a visually awesome movie to me alone apparently and Violet’s prismatic hair made me swoon. But I also really liked the pseudo mother-child relationship. When Violet threatens to kill that little clone boy Six (but doesn’t of course), that is honest to gods mothering right there. At one point she even abandons him (she’s not her kid after all), and becomes sick to her stomach with her decision. I believe it.
I don’t know. I like bad movies, that’s it. Is there something wrong with me?
I followed up a Take This Quiz post with a pointless Bad Pop Culture post. Damn, this really is a blog after all.
Edit: I just wanted to add that I do have standards though. For instance, Angelina Jolie was just awful in the first Tomb Raider movie. Sorry, but a constant sneer and bungie straps does not make sexy.
